Additionally, it is always best to configure doors fail secure. The locks should not require power to keep the door locked. Power should be provided to the lock to get the door to unlock. The output relay from the access control panel should complete the circut for power to the lock to unlock the door.

Installing Access Control - Fail Safe or Fail Secure
When getting access control on your facility you have options for locks, it is always best to avoid magnetics and other fail safe locks. These locks will unlock without power, so if battery back up or main power fails facility will be unlocked. Additionally, fail safe locks like magnetics block the AHJ - Fire department in event of emergency typically. Also, fail safe locks are required to be tied into the fire alarm system, fail safe locks have to be permitted by the AHJ and require two means of FAIL REX EXIT means >> fail safe locks make the configuration a more complex.
